BOLJOON

This 5th class municipality is considered as one of the oldest towns in the province of Cebu. This “postcard town” has a total land area of 11,500 hectares or 111.2 square kilometers wherein it is bounded by the municipalities of Alcoy and Oslob on the north and south respectively. This quaintest town in the south has approximately 13,380 total populations. In addition, it was said that Boljoon was created as a town in 1598 whilst there was a claim that the town was founded in 1600. In either case, Boljoon showcases astonishing historical sites and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Amazing Heritage

Watch Tower Ruins

This archaic watchtower is found in the place of Ilihan Boljoon. The remnants display a square plan, which is made of cut coral stones. In addition, this watchtower is attributed to Fray Julian Bermejo who built a series of ramparts during 1800’s.

Ili Rock

One of the most well known landmarks in Boljoon because of its natural rock formation at the edge of Poblacion. Furthermore, Ili Rock is the famous tourist attractions in this picturesque town.

Victoriano Mier House

This attractive Mid-American two storey house was built in 1920’s. It was made of nipa (a large palm having long leaves often used for thatching) and wood. Moreover, it has a sliding wooden windowpane and the floors still have the original pre-war tiles.

Boljoon Bridge

It was constructed on 1913 and was originally made of wood. When a typhoon hit the bridge a steel frame was added to the weaken wooden structure of the bridge to make it much stronger.

Poblacion Spring

This extraordinary beautiful spring is believed to be the place of the town’s first encounter with the Spanish colonist. Poblacion Spring is faming its way to nature tripper, backpackers and tourists.

Church Plaza

Through the years this plaza serves as a focal point of social festivities and religious activities of the church. The plaza provides a great view of the church’s edifice, Ili Rock formation and the expanse of the bay.

Blockhouse Fortress

This huge quadrangular quarter that is made of coral stonewalls and tile roof was believed as the main citadel on the church complex’s fortification. It was built on 1808 under the order of Fray Julian Bermejo. In earlier times, townspeople described it as “Dakung Balay” or the Big House.

Patrocinio De Maria Church/ Rectory/ Belfry

Built on 1783 the church was made of coral stones, hard wood and clay tile roof. In addition, the facade contains relief and carving of biblical and church characters.

Tereso Pasaul

Sometime in 1936, this typical late-American era house was built. Tereso Pasaul is also known as the Anselmo Canias Residence. The house is made of clapboard walls, sliding windows and GI roofing.

Boljoon Church

The church was founded during 1599 and is considered as one of the oldest existing stone-built church in the country. The style of the church is of baroque-rococo. Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio or simply known as Boljoon Church is the famous landmark of this picturesque town.
